Sunak: No Deal On NI Protocol Yet, More Work To Be Done

EU-UK

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told reporters that a Northern Ireland Protocol deal hasn't yet been reached following "positive talks" with local political parties in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

  • Sunak: "Today I had positive conversations with political parties in Northern Ireland, about our ongoing discussions to resolve the Northern Ireland protocol."
  • Sunak: "There's work to do. We have not got a deal yet. That's why both the foreign secretary and I but also the secretary of state for Northern Ireland will continue talking to the European Union to try and find solutions to protect Northern Ireland's place in our internal market and the Belfast Good Friday Agreement."
  • The Prime Minister's comments come after EU Commission's Maros Sefcovic reportedly put member states on alert for a possible deal on the Northern Ireland Protocol.
  • Sefcovic tweeted after a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly earlier today: "Good to see Foreign Secretary James Cleverly again to take stock of the work on the Protocol on IE/NI. Constructive engagement. Good progress. The shared objective clear: joint solutions, responding to the everyday concerns of people in NI. Hard work continues."
