Sununu Won't Contest NH Senate Seat In Blow To GOP Hopes For 2022

US

The Republican governor of New Hampshire Chris Sununu has confirmed that he will not run for the US Senate in the 2022 midterms, dealing a blow to the GOP's hopes of re-taking control of the chamber.

  • Sununu will instead seek a fourth term as governor of his home state (New Hampshire holds gubernatorial elections every two rather than four years).
  • The GOP had hoped the moderate Sununu would offer a stiff challenge to Democrat incumbent Senator Maggie Hassan, who faces re-election for the first time in 2022.
  • With Sununu passing on the Senate run, the Republicans hopes of taking the seat from Hassan are notably diminished. A number of Republican incumbents are stepping down in 2022, a situation that makes it more difficult for the GOP to make a net gain and take a 51-49 majority control in the Senate.
