Supreme Court To Hear Petition On Judges Selection Panel 7 Sep

ISRAEL

Times of Israel reporting that Israel's Supreme Court will hear a petition regarding the judges' selection panel on 7 September in what is likely to prove a focal point for public protests against the Netanyahu gov'ts judicial reform plans.

  • The opposition has brought the petition against Justice Minister Yariv Levin, demanding that he convenes the Judicial Selection Committee in order for the body to approve new judges. Levin has not convened the panel, instead delaying until the judicial reforms planned by the gov't allow him to change its composition.
  • Times of Israel: "The panel of three judges — Anat Baron, David Mintz and Yosef Elron — will convene on September 7 to review the petition. Baron is considered a liberal while the two others are conservatives."
