Trump's Hageman Endorsement Sets Stage For Bitter WY House Fight In 2022

US

Earlier today, former President Donald Trump endorsed Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman in the contest for the Republican nomination for Wyoming's at-large congressional seat in 2022. The contest is set to pit Hageman against incumbent Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a vocal opponent of Trump who has borne the ire of supporters of the former president within Congress and without.

  • The contest, while only for one congressional seat, is set to act as another measure of Trump's sway within the Republican party. Cheney's votes in favour of his impeachment, vocal criticism of Trump in the wake of the 6 Jan Capitol storming, and acceptance of a position on the bipartisan commission investigating 6 Jan has seen her stripped of her position as Republican House Conference chair.
  • Should Cheney be defeated it will act as another indicator of Trump's continued sway over the Republican base, notable in states in the Mid-West, Plains, and West of the US. A win for Cheney, however, could embolden more anti-Trump Republicans to voice their opposition to the continued influence of the former president over the GOP.
