UN Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield: Russia And China Protecting DPRK

US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, speaking alongside State Department Principle Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel at the US State Department, has told reporters that China and Russia have consistently blocked the United Nations from taking action against North Korea (DPRK).

  • Thomas-Greenfield: "We have pushed hard in the Security Council to produce product condemning the actions of the DPRK but both China and Russia have consistently protected DPRK from the actions of the Security Council. They have the veto power and have used the veto power [to overrule the other 13 members of the Security Council.]
  • Earlier today, Thomas-Greenfield told Bloomberg that the Biden administration is "working to isolate President Vladimir Putin's government" at the UN but acknowledged the difficulties of operating in light of Russia's veto on the UN Security Council.
  • Thomas-Greenfield said that the US is looking for ways to limit the influence of the Russian mercenary organisation, the Wagner Group, in Africa and Ukraine.
