US Approves Netherlands & Denmark Sending F-16s To Ukraine

UKRAINE

The defence ministers of the Netherlands and Denmark have seemingly confirmed that the US has given its approval to both countries to F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. The impact of the jets on the battlefield will not be felt for some time, given that Ukrainian pilots must still be trained to fly the modern fighter jets. Nevertheless, the permission marks the next step in the escalation in Western military support for Ukraine that began with small arms, rising to rockets and air defense systems, to tanks, and now to advanced fighter jets.

  • There is no timeframe set for the delivery of the jets. In July, Denmark's then acting Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that he hoped to see "results" from pilot training early in 2024.
  • The provision of jets comes as Ukrainian forces continue to make slow going of their counteroffensive in the south and east of the country. On 17 August, WaPo reported that according to US intel, Ukrainian forces will fail to reach the southeastern city of Melitopol as part of this year's offensive.
  • Taking the city would effectively sever the 'land bridge' between Russia and the Crimean peninsula, a step viewed as critical in forcing Putin's forces onto the back foot.
