US' Blinken Holds Presser w/Saudi Foreign Minister

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is holding a joint presser with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh. Livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/at_xnIlgpyA Comes as part of a multi-day trip to the Gulf in which Blinken has also met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman. The trip has taken place amid a period of distant, if not strained, relations between Washington and Riyadh, with China increasingly becoming a major influence in a region in which the US have historically been the primary international actor.

  • As part of the visit, the two ministers also participated in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS ministerial opening session, in which Blinken pledged USD150mn from the US in aid for regions of Syria and Iraq liberated from the Islamic State group.
  • Blinken: The US will continue to play an integral role in deepening and expanding [Saudi] normalisation with Israel.
  • Blinken: US will keep human rights firmly fixed on bilateral US-Saudi agenda.
