US Envoy To Iran: Biden Will Agree To Military Solution To Iran

US Special Envoy to Iran, Robert Malley, speaking to Foreign Policy, has conceded that sanctions on Iran are failing to resolve the ongoing nuclear standoff with Iran.

  • Malley heads the US diplomatic mission which engaged in indirect negotiations with Iran to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear accords - the multilateral Obama-era agreement which put restrictions on Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanction relief.
  • Malley's comments per Laura Rozen at Just Security: “...we have the sanctions, we have pressure, we have diplomacy. If none of that works, the president has said, as a last resort, he will agree to a military option. But we’re not there. We’re still hopeful that we will find other means & that Iran will change its current path..."
  • Malley: "I’ll be candid: I think we need to fine-tune our sanctions. It’s not the answer."
  • Malley's comments come as Israeli media reports that the US and Israel have conducted large-scale joint maneuvers which have simulated targeted strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
  • The Times of Israel: “Israel has been pushing for the US to prepare military contingency plans in order to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon...”
