US-Mexico Border Talks To Continue Through Weekend

US

Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) has confirmed to reporters that talks taking place on US-Mexico border policy between Senate negotiators and the White House will resume again this afternoon, following a 90 minutes session attended by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas this morning.

  • Chad Pegram at Fox News reports that Sinema said: "We're making progress. We had a good session this morning with excellent coffee. And we'll be meeting again this afternoon." Sinema also confirmed there will be further talks tomorrow but decline to comment on a timeframe for a legislative framework.
  • It currently appears that a border bill is likely to be punted into next year with Republicans continuing to express doubt over the timeframe for drafting and scrutinising legislative text.
  • Senator Roger Wicker (R-MI) said: "We can wait till we get the right deal, and if we don't get a deal that actually secures the border and addresses this flow of 10,000 illegal immigrants coming across per day, then we won't have we won't have a deal at all."
