US: Scholz To Tell Biden-"EU Has Done Its Part For Kyiv"

GERMANY

Wires reporting that according to an unnamed official German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will, on his upcoming visit to the US, tell President Joe Biden that the EU has "done its part for Kyiv". This follows the agreement reached at last week's special European Council summit that will see EUR50bn of EU funding allocated to supporting Ukraine militarily and financially until 2027.

  • The official claimed that German military aid to Ukraine totals EUR30bn so far. It remains to be seen whether Scholz's comments are intended to be a signal that Germany will not do more in providing support for Kyiv, or if he is implying that it is time for the US to pass its own package of support for Ukraine
  • Says that Scholz does not plan to meet with frontrunner for the Republican nomination, former President Donald Trump, during the course of the trip. Trump has vocally opposed the border bill that would see funding for Ukraine approved as part of a USD100bn+ package.
  • Reuters: "Biden and Scholz will discuss efforts to prevent regional escalation in the Middle East, their steadfast support for Israel’s right to self-defence, and the imperative of increasing humanitarian assistance and protection of civilians from harm in Gaza."
