WH Confirms In-Person Biden-Xi Meeting 14 Nov Ahead Of G20

US-CHINA

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has confirmed that President Joe Biden will meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping ahead of the G20 leaders' summit in Bali, Indonesia next week. The two will meet on Monday 14 November, the day before the summit gets underway. It will be the first time the two have met in person whilst in office, with Xi and Biden meeting at the WEF in Davos in 2017 when the latter was vice president.

  • Jean-Pierre: “The leaders will discuss efforts to maintain and deepen lines of communication between the United States and the PRC [People’s Republic of China], responsibly manage competition, and work together where our interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community,”
  • Biden speaking on 9 Nov: "What I want to do with him when we talk is lay out . . . what each of our red lines are, understand what he believes to be in the critical national interests of China, what I know to be the critical interests of the US, and to determine whether or not they conflict with one another. And if they do, how to resolve it,”
