WH Hochstein To Travel To Israel Monday To Calm Tensions w/Hezbollah

Barak Ravid at Axios reporting that US President Joe Biden's Middle East envoy, Amos Hochstein, will travel to Israel Monday to address a recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah.

  • Ravid notes: "Hochstein will arrive in Israel on Monday in an effort to prevent the recent escalation between Israel and Hezbollah from turning into an all out war, two Israeli officials told me."
  • NYT reported yesterday: "Hezbollah replied on Thursday to Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon with what the Israeli military called Hezbollah’s most serious rocket and drone assault in more than eight months of hostilities.
  • "It was the second straight day of ramped-up attacks in a conflict that has raised fears of a full-fledged war, even as Israel continued to press its military offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip."
  • ABC noted today: "Iran-backed Hezbollah militants launched dozens of rockets Friday in a third day of retaliation for the killing of a senior commander. The Israeli military said approximately 35 projectiles were identified."
  • French President Emmanuel Macron revealed yesterday, in remarks at the G7 summit in Italy, that France, the US, and Israel have agreed to work trilaterally to push a roadmap to defuse tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
  • Israel Defence Minister Yoav Gallant responded on X today: "As we fight a just war, defending our people, France has adopted hostile policies against Israel. In doing so, France ignores the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli children, women and men. Israel will not be a party to the trilateral framework proposed by France."
