White House Backs Roe Vs Wade Bill, Manchin To Vote 'No'

WHITE HOUSE

White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has said the Biden administration believes it 'imperative that Congress must act to adopt statutory protections for women's access to reproduction care' at her press gaggle aboard Air Force 1.

  • Jean-Pierre's comments came shortly before Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) told reporters that he will vote 'no' on a procedural vote in the Senate claiming that the bill in front of the chambers represents an expansion, rather than a codification, of Roe v Wade.
  • Manchin: 'They’re trying to make people believe that this is the same thing as codifying Roe v. Wade. And I want you to know, it's not. This is not the same. It expands abortion.'
  • Manchin said: 'I've made a decision. I know where I've always stood... It wipes 500, 500 state laws off the books. It expands abortion. And with that, that's not where we are today...'
  • The bill in front of the Senate was never likely to get close to the required 60 votes to overcome a GOP filibuster and Manchin who identifies as 'pro-life' voted 'no' on a similar bill earlier this year.
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made it clear that the vote was a strategic one as campaigning gets underway for November's midterms. He said yesterday that '...every senator will have to vote and every, every American will see how they voted. And I believe the Republican Party, the MAGA Republican Party, will suffer the consequences electorally when the American people see that.’
