White House "Stance Continues" On Clean Debt Limit Raise

US

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has told reporters that the White House position on the debt ceiling hasn't changed, despite the emergence of a proposal from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA)..

  • Jean-Pierre: "We have been very clear that the Speaker, without delay, should put a clean bill on the floor to avoid default. We have been very clear about that and that stance continues."
  • Jean-Pierre: "We are always happy to have a conversation about the budget... but we need to see them raise the debt ceiling to avoid a default."
  • The White House comments comes as some Democrat lawmakers openly question the wisdom of President Biden maintaining a rigid position opposed to talks with McCarthy.
  • Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH): “I don’t think there’s any harm in the two of them sitting down to talk. The idea that we’re even coming this close to a potential default is insane.”
  • Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) went further: “…it has been more than 78 days since President Biden last met with Speaker McCarthy. This signals a deficiency of leadership."
