Winner Of California Senate Primary Likely To Prevail In General Election

US

Today's California Senate primary election is likely to determine which candidate will fill the Senate seat of the late Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, currently held by caretaker Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-CA). The race has been the most expensive in California history. Poll close at 20:00 local 23:00 ET 04:00 GMT.

  • Democrat Reps Katie Porter (D-CA) – a prominent progressive - and Adam Schiff (D-CA) – a high-profile centrist - are contesting on the Democrat side against Republican, former baseball player, Steve Garvey.
  • The ‘jungle primary’ format means that the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, progress to the general election. Due to the blue-lean of the state, a Democrat is expected to win comfortably in November. Currently, polls suggest that Schiff has a slight lead over Porter and Garvey.
  • Split Ticket notes: “…the potential of a double-Democrat general election matchup has given way to a more stable picture, with Republican Steve Garvey and Democrat Adam Schiff likely to progress to the November election.”
  • Axios reports that both Porter and Schiff, “would have the opportunity to channel their national profiles into political stardom in the Senate, particularly in a second Trump administration. Schiff could solidly position himself as the premier foil to a second Trump administration. Porter would probably join the economic reform wing of the Senate and scrutinize Trump picks for the Fed, Treasury and Commerce.”
