Yellen To Deliver Major Speech Thursday As Economic Indicators Strengthen

US

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will deliver a major address at the Chicago Economic Club on January 25 highlighting, “the state of the US economy," and "President Biden’s Investing in America agenda."

  • The speech comes as Americans report increased confidencein the economy, suggesting that voters may be more receptive to the White House economic agenda in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election in November.
  • According to Treasury, “Yellen will underscore that the middle class is at the core of the President’s Investing in America agenda and her modern-supply side economic strategy, which focuses on building the economy with direct investments that make middle-class lives better...”
  • Yellen will say in Chicago, according to prepared remarks: "In the Trump administration, the idea of doing anything to fix it was a punchline. But this administration has delivered…. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a $1.2 trillion investment in our nation's infrastructure. It is bringing new opportunities within reach for middle-class families."
  • Axios notes, “Yellen, who rarely mentions the Trump administration, will draw implicit — and explicit — comparisons between the economic values of Biden and Trump. She will specifically call out Trump's signature tax deal... and argue it benefited corporations at the expense of the middle class. She will also note that 2023 didn't experience the recession that many economists predicted and that the unemployment rate has been under 4% for 23 months.”
  • Yellen will deliver another speech, a day later, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after a meetings with regional business and union leaders.
