Zelenskyy Appeals For UN Support But Faces Sterner Test In Washington

SECURITY

Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the UN for continued support, telling the Security Council that voting for Ukraine resolutions is, "helping to defend the UN charter."

  • However, Zelenskyy's sternest test may be in Washington tomorrow where he will attempt to convince House Republican to drop their blockade on a USD$24b White House request for supplemental Ukraine aid.
  • As conservative House Republicans use the Ukraine aid as leverage to extract FY24 spending cuts from the White House, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said yesterday: "Is Zelenskyy elected to Congress? Is he our president? I have questions for him. Where is the accountability for the money we've already spent?"
  • Today, the issue has expanded to the Senate with Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) stating on social media: "Today I'm putting congressional leadership & [Biden] on notice... I will not consent to expedited passage of any spending measure that provides any more US aid to Ukraine."
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will today lead an all-Senators Ukraine briefing with CIA Director Bill Burns, DNI Avril Haines, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Joint Chiefs Chair Mark Milley.
