ANC SecGen Calls For "Repriorititisation" Rather Than "Austerity" In Today's MTBPS

SOUTH AFRICA

Ruling African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula holds a press briefing to discuss the upcoming Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS):

  • The official said that the ANC "advocates for a sensible reduction in government spending and reallocating resources towards growth-oriented reforms that promote inclusive economic expansion and progress".
  • "Fiscal reprioritization is necessary to respond to lower tax collections and rising debt service costs. However, it is imperative to ensure that these reductions do not affect the frontline delivery of services."
  • The ANC calls on the government to "support Transnet as it maintains its network (...) and improves operational efficiencies" and to "continue improving Eskom's performance to reduce load-shedding and enhance energy security".
  • Mbalula's briefing can be watched on the ANC's YouTube channel or the official's X account.
