APAC Air Travel Recovery Continues in Sep

JET FUEL

The recovery in APAC air travel continued in September amid a steady return of tourists driving up international passenger numbers, according to Argus citing the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines data (AAPA).

  • Demand in the region was at 79% of levels in September 2019, the corresponding month prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • A boost in routes connecting China has also added momentum to APAC’s recovery, although China’s international flights from Jan-Sep averaged only 60% of 2019 levels.
  • "The outlook for the region's travel markets is broadly positive going into the final quarter of this year with continued expansion in air passenger demand supported by resilient growth in the Asian economies," said AAPA's director-general Subhas Menon. Argus reported.
  • "[But] Airlines are facing increasing headwinds, marked by sharply higher fuel costs in recent months," Menon added.
