Biden Expected To Nominate Julie Su To Be Next Labor Secretary

US

Politico has reported that President Biden is likely to tap Deputy Labor Secretary Julie Su to replace outgoing Marty Walsh to fill the vacant Labor Secretary position in Biden's cabinet.

  • Politico reports that, "Su’s confirmation fight could be a tough one in the Senate; she was confirmed 50-47 to her slot in 2021."
  • The appointment of Su might represent a departure from the leadership of Walsh, whose union background aligned with President Biden's push to frame his administration as union-focused to resonate with working class voters.
  • Walsh wrote in a letter to colleagues, "As someone who grew up in an active union family and is a card-carrying union member, serving as Secretary of Labor and being given this unique opportunity to help working people is itself a privilege," and called Biden, "the most pro-worker and pro-union president" in US history.
  • Politico notes that Su, on the other hand, "is an veteran litigator who speaks three languages and spent years in top bureaucratic roles in California’s Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and its Labor and Workforce Development Agency."
