Biden, Trudeau, Lopez Obrador Release Joint Statement On Brazil Unrest

BRAZIL

US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador have released a joint statement condemning the violence in Brasilia which followed claims by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro that the general election result was fraudulent.

  • The statement, per the White House, reads: "Canada, Mexico, and the United States condemn the January 8 attacks on Brazil’s democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power. We stand with Brazil as it safeguards its democratic institutions. Our governments support the free will of the people of Brazil. We look forward to working with President Lula on delivering for our countries, the Western Hemisphere, and beyond."
  • White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters that he expects Biden will hold a call with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva shortly to discuss the events.
  • The three North American leaders are in Mexico City for the two-days North American Leaders' Summit taking place today and tomorrow.
