British Politics On Hold For Some Time After Demise Of The Crown

The House of Commons is not set to see any significant political business for some time as it enters a period of mourning following the death of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

  • Apart from the session where MPs and Peers can pay tribute today and tomorrow, and the delivery of a motions of condolence and loyalty to the new King Charles III, parliament will not sit until after 21 September.
  • The Commons is due to go into the conference season recess on 22 September, not returning until 17 October. There is the prospect that the House could be recalled early, but if not then the much-anticipated fiscal statement laying out in greater detail the govt's energy price guarantee, announced yesterday by PM Liz Truss, could be delayed significantly from when it was likely to be delivered (late-September).
