EZ Oct Retail Sales Up; Beat Expected

EZ OCT RET SALES +1.5% M/M, +4.3% Y/Y; SEP -1.7% M/M


  • M/M retail sales increased by 1.5% in Oct, beating market expectations looking for a smaller uptick (BBG: +0.5%).
  • Oct's uptick followed a decline in Sep where sales fell by 1.7% (rev down from 2.0%) on a monthly basis.
  • Annual sales increased again in Oct, showing a two-month high after slowing to 2.5% in the previous month.
  • Oct's increase was mainly driven by a rebound of food and non-food products which both rose 2.0% following declines in the previous month.
  • Within non-food product sales, clothing and footwear showed the only decline, slipping to -2.8%, while mail orders and internet saw the largest increase of 6.1%.
  • Fuel sales slowed further in Oct, falling by 3.7% after declining 1.5% in Sep.
  • Among the member states, the largest gains were observed in France (+2.8%), Germany (+2.6%) and Malta (+1.9%), while Slovenia (-1.4%), Slovakia (-1.2%) and the Netherlands (-0.7%) posted the biggest drops.
