House Of Representatives To Vote On Rules Package For 118th Congress

US

The United States House of Representatives will convene shortly to begin voting on the package of rules which will outline the governing principles of the chamber for the next two years of the 118th Congress.

  • Livestream: https://www.c-span.org/video/?525240-1/house-session
  • The vote, the first test of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) tenure, includes a three-page addendum formalising the concessions McCarthy made in negotiations with the hardline members of the Republican House Freedom Caucus.
  • The package is expected to pass, as only two Republicans have indicated they may vote against the new rules, but nothing is certain in this Congress, even formalities like House rules.
  • One of the two potential "no" votes, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said on CBS over the weekend: “What I saw last week was a small faction … trying to cut backroom deals in private, in secret without anyone knowing what else was going on. So, my question today is what backroom deals were cut? We don’t know what they got or didn’t get. We haven’t seen it. We don’t have any idea what promises were made.”
