INDIA: US Lawmakers Urge Modi To Take Firm Line On China In Congress Address

MNI London: A number of influential US lawmakers have called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra to recognise the "geostrategic threat" posed by China in his address to a joint meeting of Congress which gets underway shortly.

  • Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Bob Menendez (D-NJ): "I would hope that [Modi] would recognize that China is a geostrategic threat and challenge, not just for the United States... but also for India."
  • Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) said in reference to a border dispute between India and China: "We have a very shared interest in supporting India's territorial claims and China's threats to those claims... I'm hopeful that he will mention that.”
  • Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL): "I often feel like India has sort of played both sides here and frankly, I would hope that he understands that it's in the best interest of his population to work more closely with the United States [than China]."
  • Rep. Mark Green (R-TE): "The thing that China most wants to change is the rules-based order. So if he acknowledges that the current rules-based order needs to be protected, I think that would be a huge win for us."
