/JAPAN: Yoon's Visit To Japan Confirmed For Next Week

SOUTH KOREA

President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit Tokyo on March 16-17, his office confirmed today, marking the first bilateral trip by a South Korean leader to Japan in 12 years as both East Asian nations have renewed efforts to repair their diplomatic relations.

  • Yonhap News Agency cited Yoon's office as noting that "the visit will become an important milestone for the improvement and development of South Korea-Japan relations."
  • The trip became possible as South Korea proposed a compromise solution to a dispute over wartime forced labourers, which allowed the two countries to seek progress in other areas of bilateral cooperation.
  • Yoon's office said that the details of his itinerary are still under discussion, but he will hold a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
