Joe Biden Speech in Atlanta on Voters Rights Starting Now

President Joe Biden is in Atlanta, Georgia today to deliver a speech expected to endorse changing the senate filibuster rules to pass voter rights legislation.


  • Biden will ask: ‘Will we choose democracy over autocracy, light over shadow, justice over injustice?’
  • The location of Atlanta has been selected for the symbolic significance of the city in the Civil Rights movement, and as part of a broader push by Democrats to stress threat to democratic values. This speech will follow from Biden’s speech on January 6 in which attacked former President Donald Trump, and his supporters within the GOP, for trying to subvert democratic institutions following the 2020 presidential election.
  • Democrats will be hoping a direct address from the president, and the symbolism of the speech, will be enough to convince senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to support the ‘nuclear option’ of bypassing the filibuster. Success of this strategy is looking unlikely.
