Monday 4 September:

  • Russia-Turkey: Russian President Vladimir Putin hosts his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Talks are set to focus on Turkish efforts to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative following Russia’s cancellation of the deal in July. Russia has alleged that Western nations are not facilitating the export of Russian grain and fertilisers, breaching the UN and Turkish-brokered agreement. Without a resumption of the deal, regions heavily reliant on Ukrainian and Russian grain such as the Middle East and North Africa could have to contend with unstable food supplies. This could have knock-on effects in Europe as more countries compete for finite supplies, pushing up prices and sustaining higher inflation for a longer period.
