New Japan FM Speaks To China's Wang For 1st Time, Islands Discussed

Japan's newly-minted foreign minister, Yoshimasa Hayashi, spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for the first time earlier today. Kyodo news reports that Hayashi brought up Japanese concerns about the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands in the South China Sea.

  • With next year marking the 50th anniversary of the normalisation of relations between Japan and China, there is significant focus on the stance the new Japanese gov't of PM Fumio Kishida takes towards Beijing.
  • Kishida seen as hailing from a more dovish faction of the governing LDP re: China, but campaigned for leadership on a hawkish platform. Will have to lean one way or the other when it comes to future interactions w/China.
