PM Suga: Delta Variant Has Transformed Situation

Speaking in a televised press conference, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga states that the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 has 'transformed the situation' of the pandemic in Japan. Promises JPY300bn (USD2.75bn) to local gov'ts to support economy.

  • Suga: By the end of August, 50% of the population will have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Suga: Ending the state of emergency in prefectures will be contingent on securing healthcare
  • Says that 'lockdowns are not a decisive factor on the virus in other countries'.
  • Comes as Suga extends the current state of emergency measures in Tokyo and other prefectures, now accounting for 60% of the Japanese population.
