Second Vote For House Speaker Underway Shortly

The House of Representatives is shortly due to gavel into session to hold a second vote for the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • The chamber will first hold a quorum call for attendance. Absent members will alter the number of votes required to win the gavel, currently expected to be 217.
  • Reps will then give nominating speeches. Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) will again be forwarded as the formal GOP nominee. Democrats will nominate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as they have in all 16 ballots this year.
  • The nominating process will provide insight on whether GOP rebels have coalesced around an alternate candidate. None was put forward yesterday with rebel votes going to various candidates include former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and former House Rep Lee Zeldin.
  • Should Jordan fail to flip rebel votes, attention may turn to the prospect of empowering Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to with more traditional functions of the chair.
  • Jeffries told reporters this morning: “All options are on the table to end the Republican civil war”
