Snap Election A Major Gamble For PM Sanchez

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's calling of a snap election for 23 July is a major risk for the incumbent, with opinion polls showing that a right-wing coalition involving the centre-right People's Party (PP) and the nationalist Vox could command a majority in the Congress of Deputies after the election. The election will garner significant attention from the wider European Union given that Spain assumes the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July, with a potential change in government altering the nature of Spain’s presidential term.
