Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to 5-Year Average

Swiss hydropower stocks rose by 0.9 percentage points last week to 86.8% of capacity, widening the surplus to the five-year and long-term averages, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks widened the surplus to the five-year average to 1.6 percentage points, from 0.7 points a week earlier. The surplus to the long-term average – since 1997 – widened to 4.1 points, up by 2 points on the week.
  • Reserves are typically reaching the maximum levels during this time of the year.
  • Hydropower output in Switzerland rose on the week. Output from pumped storage increased by 263MW on the week to 1.01GW. Production from reservoirs was up by 197MW to 1.54GW on the week, Entso-E data showed.
  • Weather forecasts suggest high precipitation in the region of Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – supporting inflows into reserves.
