Top Court Admits Petition To Probe PM, Decides Against His Suspension
THAILAND
The Constitutional Court voted 6-3 to accept a petition filed by 40 Senators to review Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's status over his nomination for PM's Office Minister Pichit Chuenban, giving him 15 days to submit defence papers. At the same time, the top court decided against suspending Srettha as Prime Minister pending the final verdict.
- The Senators asked the court to rule on Pichit's status as well, amid doubts about his eligibility to occupy a Cabinet position in light of his past conviction, but the official voluntarily resigned earlier this week.
- Thai Enquirer notes that the vote on whether to suspend the Prime Minister was surprisingly tight (5-4), "raising speculation that when the verdict comes out, it might not be in favour of the Prime Minister."
