Top Iranian, US Envoys Confirm Vienna Talks Tomorrow-RTRS

IRAN

Reuters confirms that top negotiators/envoys from the US and Iran will travel to Vienna for a short set of talks on 4 Aug aiming to revive previous rounds of negotiations on the Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPoA).

  • Iranian FM spox: "(Iranian negotiator) Bagheri Kani will leave Tehran in a few hours ... In this round of talks, which will be held as usual with the coordination of the European Union, ideas presented by different sides will be discussed,"
  • A US official confirmed that Rob Malley, the US special envoy for Iran, will travel to Vienna this week.
  • Comes after EU chief negotiator Enrique Mora confirmed his attendance earlier today: https://marketnews.com/eu-negotiator-returns-to-vi...
  • Ellie Geranmayeh at the European Council on Foreign Relations: "...After many months, P5+1 [China, Russia, Germany, France, UK, US] will all be there together with Iran. [...] P4+1 [excl US] should encourage max flexibility by both. Obstacles remain & unclear if much progress will be made. But will be crucial to exhaust all diplomatic pathways. Alternatives to JCPOA look terrible. This is why, despite domestic opposition, Tehran & Washington are rightly giving diplomacy breathing room. JCPOA collapse is lose-lose for Europe/West and Iran. As prominent scientists warned Biden in June, Iran's nuclear activities reached dangerous levels & best way to address this is an immediate return to 2015 nuclear deal. Powerful grouping in Iran opposes JCPOA revival that cannot be guaranteed as sustainable. But there's also strong desire to avoid JCPOA collapse. This is because Iran stands to lose most if deal falls apart."
