Former President Donald Trump is shortly set to unveil a new cryptocurrency business, World Liberty Financial, part of a major pivot towards the sector as he courts the industry ahead of the presidential election. The address from Mar-a-Lago is expected to be streamed onTrump's X page.
- Trump said in a video message on X: “We’re embracing the future with crypto, and leaving the slow and outdated big banks behind."
- The New York Times notes: "It’s unusual for presidential candidates to start new businesses in the middle of a campaign, and Mr. Trump’s business interests have raised concerns about conflicts of interest throughout his political career."
- Trump's embrace of the industry has included a pledge to crackdown on regulation and a keynote address at July's annual Bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where he promised to make the US, “the crypto capital of the planet.”
- Coindesk reports on the business: "According to a person familiar with the plans, the project will also include a new cryptocurrency: WLFI, a non-transferable governance token. A transfer restriction could make the asset difficult for speculators to trade."
- CBS notes that Trump's crypto turn could shore up support amongst young men, a key pillar of his base: "Forty-three percent of American men ages 18 to 20 say they have invested in, traded or used cryptocurrency, compared to 16% of the general population."
