US Congressional Delegation To Visit Japan Next Week

US-JAPAN

Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is planning to lead a bipartisan congressional delegation (CODEL) to Japan next week to discuss heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

  • Hagerty will meet with government and business leaders in Japan ‘to further strengthen the strong alliance between the US and Japan, as well as to hear directly from these leaders about the ongoing challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, including North Korea’s escalating provocations and Communist China’s continued threats toward Taiwan.’
  • Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and John Cornyn (R-TX) will also join the CODEL.
  • The announcement comes as another CODEL to the region led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been cancelled following Pelosi's positive COVID-19 test. Pelosi's trip, reportedly, had planned a stop in Taiwan which sparked a heated diplomatic exchange with Beijing.
  • There has been no suggestion yet that Hargety's CODEL will visit Taiwan.
