Moldovan Pres. Convenes Security Council After Blasts In Transnistria

SECURITY

Guy Faulconbridge at Reuters tweets that Moldovan President Maia Sandu has convened a meeting of the country's national security council following blasts reported at the ministry of state security as well as at two telecommunications towers in the breakaway province of Transnistria.

  • The region has been de facto self-governed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and hosts an estimated 1,300-1,500 Russian troops.
  • The Moldovan gov't has previously warned about the potential for 'false flag' attacks in Transnistria (in which it has no effective control) as a pretext for a Russian invasion.
  • There have been concerns since the initial invasion of Ukraine that Russia could seek to gain control of the entire Black Sea coast of Ukraine, reaching up to the Transnistrian border, before annexing the pro-Russian region.
  • This scenario would mark a further escalation of the conflict in Eastern Europe, drawing in another nation into the direct fighting. Given its proximity, it would likely also see NATO forces in neighbouring Romania put onto the highest level of alert.
