Coalition Talks Continue, Idea Of Rotational Sejm Speakership Gains Traction

POLAND
  • Pro-EU parties continue to negotiate the distribution of key political appointments and joint policy agenda. PAP newswire circulated a source report suggesting that the leaders of the three parties will meet tomorrow to hammer out a deal, which could be signed as soon as on Monday. Civic Coalition leader and the pro-EU camp's candidate for Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he will hold an open meeting with voters on Monday, while lauding progress in talks with his partners from the Third Way and the Left.
  • Rzeczpospolita reports that senior Civic Coalition lawmaker Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska rather than the Left's Magdalena Biejat is now the front-runner to become Senate Speaker. This would probably entail some form of compensation for the Left, one option being a rotation of the Sejm Speaker position between the Left and the Third Way. Both Speakers have significant agenda-setting powers in respective chambers of parliament, can deliver special addresses to the nation broadcast public media, and are second and third in the informal order of precedence.
  • Local markets are closed for All Saints' Day, which is a public holiday in Poland.
