DOJ Begins Largest Antitrust Case Against A Tech Giant In Over 20 Years

US

The US Department of Justice will today begin a huge antitrust trial against tech giant Google - the most significant US government action against a tech giant since a monopoly case against Microsoft in 2001.

  • Semafor reports that it is, “the biggest such case in decades and one with the potential to reshape both Big Tech and the internet.”
  • AP reports: “The Justice Department filed its antitrust lawsuit against Google nearly three years ago during the Trump administration, charging that the company has used its internet search dominance to gain an unfair advantage against competitors.”
  • Bill Baer, former DOJ antitrust head under President Barack Obama, told Politico the trial against the $1.7 trillion company will be “the most significant U.S. monopoly case in a generation.”
  • Politico: “With other federal investigations looming into Amazon, Apple, Ticketmaster and others, it could have broad implications for the government’s concerns that modern companies are using their money and power to forge new kinds of monopolies...”
  • The New York Times reports that the 10-week trial, “could have broad ripple effects, slowing down or potentially dismantling the largest internet companies after decades of unbridled growth.”
