Iran Negotiator-Discussed Sanctions Lifting w/EU In Doha Talks

Chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani tweets: "Had a serious and constructive meeting with Enrique Mora in Doha. We exchanged views and discussed a range of issues including negotiations on sanctions lifting." Mora is the European External Action Service [EEAS] Deputy Secretary General and serves as the EU's chief negotiator with Iran.   • Journalist Stephanie Liechtenstein tweeted on 20 June that: "talks are focused mainly on Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine as well as on the nuclear file and detainees.”
  • The prospect of indirect talks between Iran and the US has been speculated on by observers in recent weeks, but no confirmation from either side has been forthcoming.
  • While the Iranian negotiator says that negotiations had included discussions on lifting sanctions, this remains a difficult prospect to envision the US agreeing to in the run up to a presidential election campaign in 2024, while Iran is still enriching nuclear fuel beyond IAEA limits, and while Tehran is believed to still be providing drones to Russia for its use in its invasion of Ukraine.
