Ramaphosa Addresses AGOA Forum; Asks USTR Tai For Extension

SOUTH AFRICA

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa speaking at the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) forum in Johannesburg. The AGOA Forum is a summit for those 35 African nations eligible for the trade pact to discuss issues of trade and investment with representatives from the United States, with USTR Katherine Tai in attendance.

  • Ramaphosa states that "Africa countries want an investment-led approach by US that aims to diversify international supply chains of critical minerals."
  • Calls for a significant extension in AGOA. At present the act has been extended twice and is due to expire in Sep 2025. Ramaphosa: 'The US and Africa are here for the long-haul, so let us make AGOA a long-haul opportunity for all of us."
  • Ramaphosa: "The AGOA Act has improved exports and led to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs such as in the manufacturing and textile sector.
