Senate To Hold 'Doomed' Vote On Border Security Bill Shortly

The Senate is shortly due to hold another vote on the bipartisan border security bill which tanked in January after an intervention from former President Donald Trump. LIVESTREAM

  • Following the first failed vote, Democrats accused Republicans of torpedoing the bill, originally negotiated to accompany the national security supplemental aid package, for political reasons; To prevent Democrats enacting legislation to which could reduce expose to immigration at the general election.
  • The vote is all-but-certain to fail but will provide cover for vulnerable Democrats and may lay the groundwork for President Biden to pursue executive actions on border security and immigration which have been in the pipeline for a number of months.
  • NBC notes: "The Biden administration is finalizing details of a new executive action that would let the president temporarily shut the southern border to migrants if necessary, and it is in talks with Mexican leaders to get their crucial buy-in before proceeding..."
  • The Washington Post notes on today's vote: “We’re watching to see if any of the four Republicans who backed it in February [will vote for it]… We’re also watching to see how many Democrats oppose it. Five voted against it earlier this year and more are expected to do so today because it’s a compromise bill that won’t pass and has no other priorities — like funding Ukraine — attached to it.”
