Summit Starts As Italy, Greece Face Backlash Over COVID Tests

EUROPEAN COUNCIL

The final European Council leaders' summit of the year is underway, and far from a picture of unity two of the member states are facing a backlash after introducing requirements that travellers from other EU nations submit negative COVID-19 tests on entry.

  • The gov'ts of Italy and Greece have introduced the restrictions, supposedly without providing notice to other nations. For the past six months EU citizens have been able to travel freely within the bloc.
  • There are myriad other issues on the table for the summit, including spiking energy prices, the 'Strategic Compass' document that seeks to set up a joint EU defence stance, heightened tensions with Russia over Ukraine, and the migrant situation both on the EU's Belarusian border and in the English Channel.
  • However, the rapid spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant within the bloc is likely to dominate proceedings.
  • No set time for post-EUCO presser, but link to livestream can befound here.
