Germany's Scholz Talks Down EU Accession In Exchange For Sweden In NATO

TURKEY

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has sought to talk down the prospect of re-starting long-stalled talks between Ankara and Brussels on Turkey's EU accession in exchange for the Turkish gov't allowing Sweden to join the NATO alliance. Speaking in Berlin on the occasion of a visit from Australian PM Anthony Albanese, Scholz stated that "Sweden meets all the requirements for NATO membership,...The other question [on Turkey's EU accession] is one that is not connected with it and that is why I do not think it should be seen as a connected issue."

  • The likelihood of EU member stated agreeing to restart meaningful talks with Turkey on membership is slim. Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan implied that if talks resumed then his gov't might ratify Sweden's accession to NATO:https://marketnews.com/erdogan-links-swedish-nato-...
